At least seven members of the “Gran Grif” gang were killed during a police operation in Liancourt, in the Artibonite department, on Thursday, September 4, 2025. Several injured police officers were rushed to the hospital after heavy exchanges of gunfire.
This intervention comes in a region where gang violence has reached alarming levels. According to the UN, more than 1,000 people have been killed, over 200 injured, and about 620 kidnapped in Artibonite and the Central department between October 2024 and June 2025.
The humanitarian crisis is also intensifying with massive population displacements. Again according to the UN, more than 239,000 people fled these areas during the same period, while more than 1.3 million displaced persons have been recorded nationwide.
