The Provisional Electoral Council (CEP) opens this Thursday, August 20, 2026, the candidate registration period for the upcoming presidential and legislative elections, a step that will continue until October 2. This new phase comes as 105 political structures, including 88 parties and 17 coalitions, have been approved to take part in the electoral process.
According to the calendar published by the CEP, the first round of the presidential and legislative elections and the constitutional referendum is set for December 13, 2026, while the second round as well as local elections are scheduled for February 21, 2027. The submission of applications will be followed by their review by the electoral authority, which will determine which candidates meet the conditions required to participate in the elections.
The organization of these deadlines remains closely linked to the evolution of the security situation, with the CEP itself having emphasized that adherence to the calendar depends in particular on the existence of a sufficiently safe climate and the necessary resources. During his recent visit to Haiti, OAS Secretary-General Albert Ramdin also insisted on the need to secure traffic routes and enable voters to access polling stations, as armed violence continues to complicate the organization of the elections.
