The commune of Gros-Morne in Artibonite was struck by a new wave of violence on Monday, September 28, 2026. An attack attributed to the Kokorat san ras gang operating from Ti Bwadòm left at least ten dead and several wounded by gunfire, according to local sources.
The attackers raided several localities, notably Savann Long, Grépin, and Dosni, where residents were targeted as they went about their daily activities. The death toll remains provisional, and no official confirmation had been communicated by authorities at the time of writing.
According to eyewitness accounts gathered locally, this offensive occurred after an intervention by the Gang Suppression Force (GSF) against members of the armed group. The withdrawal of security forces subsequently left several neighborhoods exposed to reprisals by the bandits, while heavy gunfire continued to echo throughout the commune, spreading panic among residents.
This new tragedy is part of a series of attacks that have hit Gros-Morne for several months. In January 2025, at least eleven people were killed in Grépin and Campêche before further assaults left two dead near the Jacques Roumain High School on August 6, followed by five additional victims in the town center on August 24 of the same year.
More recently, on September 7, 2026, several people—including the general director of ONAPÉ, Stéphanie Paultre, and attorney Caleb Jean-Baptiste—were kidnapped on the Ennery road and taken to Pendu. Faced with this persistent insecurity, organizational leaders and local actors are demanding the reinforcement of specialized units and the deployment of at least two armored vehicles, while denouncing inaction attributed to police leadership in Artibonite.
