U.S. justice has handed down a heavy sentence in an arms-trafficking case involving Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Jonathan Rafael Ortega Martinez was sentenced to ten years in federal prison for participating in the smuggling of more than one thousand illegal firearms from Florida.
The facts were established following an investigation conducted across multiple territories, revealing a structured and long-standing network. The U.S. Department of Justice described the ruling as “a significant conviction in an international firearms trafficking conspiracy.”
The operation involved several agencies, including the ATF, HSI, and INTERPOL, in a coordinated effort. According to U.S. authorities, this cooperation illustrates “the United States’ commitment to working with regional partners to combat transnational crime.”
Washington says it aims to send a clear message to criminal networks operating in the region. “We are determined to hold accountable those who seek to destabilize the region,” authorities warned, adding that “the era of impunity is over.”
