The UNESCO Office in Haiti hosted, this Thursday, August 20, 2026, the official launch of the Scientific Seminar on Slavery Museums Worldwide, an initiative led by the National Committee for the Slave Route (CNRE). For two days, historians, researchers, museology specialists, and heritage actors will examine experiences developed in different countries regarding the memory of slavery.
The meeting also aims to foster reflection on the creation of a Slavery Museum in Haiti, with Bwa Kayiman as the site envisioned to host this project of great historical and symbolic significance. The exchanges on August 20 and 21 are intended to compare existing models with Haitian realities and identify the conditions necessary for establishing such a memorial space.
The opening ceremony brought together representatives from UNESCO, the CNRE, and the State University of Haiti, alongside several partners committed to promoting national heritage. The French Embassy in Haiti was also among the institutions present at this initiative dedicated to transmitting the history of slavery.
Beyond discussions on museology and memorial sites, participants will take stock of museums in Haiti and examine the different steps that could advance the Bwa Kayiman project. Through this seminar, the organizers seek to anchor the memory of slavery in a scientific and heritage approach capable of strengthening its transmission to future generations.
