A general practitioner working in Las Guáranas, in Duarte province, is at the center of an extremely serious judicial case. He is accused of sexually assaulting a young woman who had come in for a routine medical examination.
According to the complaint, the 20-year-old Haitian victim had gone to the center for an ultrasound, unaware of the ordeal that would follow. After the examination, the doctor allegedly gave her misleading medical information to gain her trust.
The young woman claims the doctor told her she was not pregnant while mentioning a supposed benign illness requiring treatment. Taking advantage of the situation, he then allegedly asked her to reposition herself on the examination table before committing the assault, presenting it as a normal medical act.
After the incident, the victim states that the doctor threatened her, allegedly saying he would contact immigration services if she spoke out. Despite the shock, she decided to file a complaint with authorities, triggering a formal investigation.
The case took on a broader dimension when investigators discovered several similar complaints against the same practitioner. In total, three additional allegations were reportedly filed, leading to his arrest and placing the matter at the center of a national debate on sexual abuse in medical settings.
