The Transitional Presidential Council Laments Alarming Rise in Violence Following Attacks on American Planes

November 14, 2024

The Transitional Presidential Council (TPC) has expressed its dismay over a series of violent incidents that have rocked the metropolitan region over the past 48 hours. Armed gangs not only terrorized the population by attacking citizens and setting private property ablaze, but they also targeted commercial flights. On Monday, November 11, a Spirit Airlines plane arriving from Fort Lauderdale came under gunfire as it landed at Toussaint Louverture International Airport. Two other planes from JetBlue and American Airlines were also targeted.

In a statement released on November 12, the TPC strongly condemned these actions, calling the attack on a civilian aircraft a “cowardly crime.” The Council emphasized that these acts aim to isolate Haiti on the international stage at a time when the country is desperately trying to restore some semblance of normalcy. Haitian authorities have vowed to pursue those responsible and bring them to justice to ensure such actions do not go unpunished.

In response to these events, the Haitian Armed Forces (FADH), the Haitian National Police (HNP), and the Multinational Security Support (MSS) mission have increased their presence around the airport to ensure the safety of flights and residents living nearby. Additional units have been deployed to reassure airlines serving Haiti and prevent further strain in relations with international operators.

The Transitional Presidential Council has also issued an urgent appeal for vigilance among the Haitian population, urging citizens to work closely with law enforcement to prevent further escalation of violence. They highlighted that only close cooperation between citizens and authorities could bring an end to these criminal acts and preserve the country’s peace and security.

The statement underscores the authorities’ commitment to restoring order amid a prolonged security crisis, as the nation grapples with a complex situation requiring strong and immediate actions. The TPC reaffirmed its commitment to combating insecurity, ensuring the protection of all citizens, and working toward rebuilding an economy weakened by years of instability.
