The Provisional Electoral Council (CEP in French) has dispatched a delegation to the United States to study the conditions for participation of Haitians living abroad in the next elections. This initiative aims to prepare a pilot experiment intended to facilitate the exercise of the diaspora’s right to vote, according to a press note from the institution referenced CEP/DC/073-2526.
Led by the CEP president, Peterson Pierre-Louis, the delegation began its work in Florida, where he opened the working sessions. The secretary general, Nemrod Sanon, and the treasurer, Schnaïda Adély, were to continue discussions with Haitian diplomatic and consular representatives as well as with diaspora organizations.
The discussions notably concern the practical modalities and legal conditions necessary for the participation of Haitian nationals abroad in the electoral process. The CEP intends to gather information and proposals likely to guide the development of procedures, while ensuring compliance with the electoral decree in force.
This approach constitutes a preparatory step whose scope will depend on the modalities that will be retained to concretize the diaspora’s electoral participation. The CEP reaffirms, for its part, its commitment to inclusive, impartial and transparent elections, while insisting on respect for the principles of electoral independence and integrity.
