From Washington, Garry Conille Sets the Election Deadline for 2025

July 4, 2024

Haitian Prime Minister Garry Conille confirmed during an exclusive interview with RFI that general elections must be held in Haiti by 2025. This announcement, made from Washington where Conille is making his first official trip abroad, marks a strong commitment to the democratic stability of the country.

Conille underlined the importance of this electoral deadline in an interview with Guillaume Naudin. “I think this is absolutely essential,” he declared, assuring that his administration is working tirelessly to ensure that this electoral process takes place in a free and fair manner.

During his interview, Conille also addressed several crucial topics for Haiti. He expressed his determination to regain total control of the national territory, an ambition supported by the deployment of multinational support forces, including an initial contingent of 200 Kenyan police officers. “Our Haitian partners are taking all necessary steps to ensure that this happens as quickly as possible,” he said, adding that reconciliation between the police and the community is essential for the success and sustainability of this operation.

Conille also mentioned the ongoing effort to strengthen the police force, with the integration of 455 new police officers and specialized forces.

At the same time, the Prime Minister discussed the economic and humanitarian challenges facing Haiti. He called for systematic international support to put in place strategies to overcome these crises. “We must mobilize our partners so that they support us in implementing sustainable solutions,” he declared, rejoicing to see the international community more mobilized than a few months ago.
