Haitian Crisis: Abinader and Former Dominican Presidents Agree on a Unified and Joint Policy Approach

May 18, 2025

In response to the worsening situation in Haiti, President Luis Abinader held a two-hour meeting with former heads of state Leonel Fernández, Hipólito Mejía, and Danilo Medina. Together, they agreed on the need for a unified stance and coordinated strategy to address the unprecedented scale of the crisis.

A consensus was reached to establish joint working groups tasked with shaping a national policy toward Haiti. The four leaders also welcomed the formal convening of the Economic and Social Council to develop concrete and sustainable measures.

The Dominican presidency committed to regularly updating the former presidents on the evolving security situation, particularly in relation to the impact of the Haitian crisis on Dominican territory. There was a clear intention to integrate past political experience into current governance.

In the coming days, the president will hold bilateral meetings with each former president, aligned with their respective political affiliations. This approach is aimed at ensuring a unified Dominican diplomatic response to the Haitian crisis.

Finally, several high-ranking security and diplomatic officials presented the former presidents with the current administration’s measures. All agreed that the Dominican Republic cannot resolve Haiti’s instability alone, implicitly calling for a broader regional and international mobilization.
