Washington Ends TPS for Haiti: Thousands of Nationals Urged to Return

June 29, 2025

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security announced on Friday the termination of the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haitian nationals. This decision will take effect on September 2, 2025, following the official expiration of the designation on August 3.

Secretary Kristi Noem made this decision after consulting relevant agencies and assessing the current situation in Haiti. She stated that “conditions in the country have improved sufficiently to allow Haitians to return safely.”

A DHS spokesperson affirmed that the move aims to “restore the integrity of the immigration system,” reminding that TPS is, by definition, a temporary status. According to the spokesperson, “it is now safe for Haitian citizens to return home.”

U.S. authorities are encouraging TPS holders to use the CBP Home app to report their departure from U.S. territory. Additionally, eligible individuals may apply for other forms of legal status to remain in the United States.

Concluding that the temporary stay of Haitians no longer serves the national interest, Secretary Noem closes a chapter for thousands of families who have been settled for years. Migrant advocacy organizations are expected to respond in the coming days to this decision, which carries significant humanitarian implications.
