The United States deported more than one hundred Haitian nationals to Cap-Haïtien this Thursday, just days before the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) expiration scheduled for July 24. This operation marks the beginning of an intensification of deportations, as more than 300,000 Haitians will lose their protection against removal.
US authorities have informed the Haitian government that at least two deportation flights per week, each carrying approximately 200 people, are expected to be organized after TPS expires. Migrant advocacy organizations condemn a decision made while the country faces a severe security and humanitarian crisis.
The Haitian government and several humanitarian organizations believe the country does not have the capacity to accommodate such an influx of returnees. Haiti is already facing massive population displacement, widespread insecurity caused by gangs, and the forced return of thousands of migrants expelled each month from the Dominican Republic.
This new wave of deportations comes as the United Nations confirmed the deaths of at least 61 people, including 14 children, in a gang attack in Kenscoff. Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé has called on Washington to suspend deportations, stating that “this is not the time” to repatriate Haitians to a country plunged into a deep crisis.
