Under International Sanctions, Laurent Lamothe Announces Lawsuits Against His Critics for Defamation

January 14, 2026

Still subject to international sanctions, former Haitian Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe announced on January 5, 2026, his intention to initiate legal proceedings. The announcement was made in a message posted on his X account, without specifying any jurisdiction.

Laurent Lamothe claims to have mandated law firms to respond to what he describes as defamation campaigns conducted against him for several years. He refers to “false information” and accusations he considers fabricated and repeatedly relayed.

According to the former head of government, these attacks are allegedly orchestrated by interest groups and a limited number of detractors whom he accuses of reviving the issue on social media. He claims to be the target of politically motivated harassment, without providing factual evidence to support his claims.

“Law firms have been retained. Appropriate legal proceedings will be initiated,” he wrote, without specifying the nature of the actions or the judicial systems concerned. No timeline or operational details were communicated.

This statement comes as Laurent Lamothe remains under sanctions imposed since 2022 by Canada and the United States, related to allegations of corruption and involvement in political instability in Haiti. To date, no foreign authority has announced a review or lifting of these measures.
