Sunrise Airways announced on Friday, June 6, 2025, that it will resume domestic flights starting June 12, after several months of suspension due to security concerns. The announcement follows the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the airline, the Ministry of Public Works, and the National Airport Authority. The agreement was signed on Thursday in the presence of Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé, who hailed the move as a significant step forward for citizen mobility.
The resumption comes amid ongoing security challenges around Toussaint Louverture International Airport. Since November 2024, gang gunfire has targeted commercial aircraft, prompting major U.S. airlines to suspend operations. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has since extended its ban on U.S. flights to Port-au-Prince through September 8, 2025, citing continued risks from armed groups.
Currently, Cap-Haïtien International Airport remains the only viable gateway for direct commercial flights between Haiti and the United States. These flights are operated by Sunrise Airways and several smaller carriers. Haitian authorities continue to work toward securing the Toussaint Louverture airport, though the situation remains volatile.
