Judge Jorge Pereira ruled on Thursday to keep Pierre Réginald Boulos in detention, firmly rejecting the request for provisional release filed by his attorneys. The closed-door hearing underscores the legal deadlock faced by the Haitian businessman.
Outside the courthouse, a crowd of Haitian protesters gathered, calling for U.S. authorities to block Boulos’ deportation to Haiti and demanding that he remain in custody on American soil. Demonstrators also urged the arrest of all alleged accomplices to the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse who are currently residing in the United States.
According to immigration authorities, Boulos is already on the list of individuals awaiting deportation, but no further action will be taken until a final court ruling is issued. A new hearing has been scheduled for August 26, prolonging uncertainty over the fate of the former presidential candidate.
