The armed clashes that have shaken Cité Soleil since Saturday have pushed Doctors Without Borders (MSF in French) to evacuate its Drouillard hospital center and suspend its activities in the area. The facility, transformed into an improvised refuge, has welcomed hundreds of residents seeking to flee the heavy gunfire between armed groups.
Within twelve hours, medical teams treated more than forty gunshot wounds, while over 800 people crowded into the hospital grounds for protection. Even a security guard for the organization was hit by a stray bullet before being evacuated for care.
MSF explains that several employees and their families also had to take refuge on site due to the intensity of the violence. Faced with the impossibility of continuing to work under gunfire, the organization says it chose to withdraw its teams to guarantee their safety and that of patients.
The closure of the Drouillard center worsens an already dramatic situation in northern Cité Soleil, where no other hospital is now functioning. In less than twenty-four hours, two medical structures have ceased their activities, leaving thousands of residents without access to care in the heart of a humanitarian crisis that continues to deepen.
