Jacmel Law Scool Charts a Path of Resilience and Hope

June 29, 2025

In a ceremony filled with solemnity and emotion, the Jacmel School of Law and Economics (École de Droit et des Sciences Économiques de Jacmel-EDSEJ in French) celebrated the graduation of its 2020–2024 cohort, named after Joseph Anténor Firmin, on June 22, 2025. For the first time, the institution awarded degrees to 94 graduates, including 32 in economics—a newly established program.

Held at the Saint-Michel Church, the event gathered local authorities, faculty members, families, and the ceremony’s honorary guests: sponsor Miradin Morlan and patron Miralda Jameau. “Being a patron is more than a title: it’s a commitment to stand by your side, to listen, support, and share,” Ms. Jameau said in a heartfelt address.

In the face of a country shaken by crises, the graduates were called upon to become active forces for change. “Your degree is not an end in itself, but the beginning of a new, enriching chapter in your social, professional, and personal life,” Ms. Jameau stressed, praising the resilience and dedication of Haiti’s youth.

Francisque Wilkes, president of the graduating class, delivered an impassioned speech: “We have turned adversity into strength… This victory is ours.” He highlighted the symbolic significance of their success in a nation seeking direction, urging authorities to “bring our country back to the path of constitutional order.”

Dean Frantz Comonce received warm applause for his academic vision that led to the launch of the economics department. “Thanks to you, the school is now stronger and more rooted in the realities of our society,” Wilkes noted, recognizing this bold move amid national turmoil.

The day, marked by both pride and clear-eyed reflection, underscored education’s power to transform. “Your actions must help shape a new future for our country,” the class president concluded, to sustained applause from those gathered.
