Haiti: More Than 600 Deaths and 375 Injured in Six Months According to UN

August 9, 2026

Gang violence has caused at least 613 deaths and 375 injuries in the Cité Soleil and Plaine du Cul-de-Sac areas between March 6 and July 31, 2026, according to data attributed to the United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti (BINUH). Among the victims are 111 women and 77 children, illustrating the scale of the consequences of armed violence on civilian populations.

The report also mentions more than 176 women and girls victims of sexual violence attributed to gang members, including cases of gang rape. These figures are part of a broader crisis: in June, UN Secretary-General António Guterres indicated that nearly 1.5 million people had been displaced by violence in Haiti and that women and children were paying the heaviest price.

The United Nations had already documented a sharp increase in gender-based violence in the country, with more than 8,000 incidents recorded in 2025, more than half of which involved sexual violence and nearly two-thirds involved gang rape. In its humanitarian plan for 2026, the UN also estimated that 5.7 million Haitians were facing severe food insecurity and that violence by armed groups had forced approximately 1.4 million people to leave their homes.
