Earthquake in the Caribbean, Haiti Briefly Shaken

February 11, 2026

An earthquake felt at dawn surprised residents of several areas of Haiti, particularly along the southern coast, this Sunday, February 8, 2026. Authorities have, at this stage, reported no casualties or material damage.

Preliminary data place the seismic event in eastern Cuba, near Imías, with an estimated magnitude between 5.3 and 5.5 according to available readings.

The tremors, felt around 7 a.m., spread beyond the epicenter. In addition to Haiti, the vibrations were felt across several Caribbean territories, including the Bahamas as well as certain peripheral U.S. islands.

The depth and location of the event explain its regional spread. In Grand’Anse, non-scientific interpretations circulated, with some residents linking the tremor to the presence of foreign military vessels at sea. Specialists, however, remind the public that the event falls within the normal seismic activity of the Caribbean zone, which is regularly exposed to such natural phenomena.
