Chadian President Mahamat Idriss Déby announced the deployment of 1,500 troops to Haiti as part of the Gang Suppression Force (FRG) supported by the United Nations. This contribution will be organized into two battalions of 750 soldiers, with an initial contingent of 400 already on the ground.
Haiti, which has been facing a severe security crisis for several years, remains marked by violence from armed groups responsible for killings, kidnappings, sexual violence, and looting. According to the United Nations, these gangs have expanded their influence beyond the capital in recent months.
Chad highlighted its regular participation in international operations, citing engagements across Africa within regional and peacekeeping missions. The announcement was made before Parliament by the President of the National Assembly, Ali Kolotou Tchaïmi.
The FRG, which succeeds the mission led by Kenya, is intended to reinforce the Haitian police and could reach 5,500 international personnel. A report by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights estimates that more than 5,500 deaths were linked to violence between March 2025 and January 2026.
