During a debate conference for signatories of the December 21 Accord, held on Saturday, Marjory Michel, former Minister of Women’s Affairs and a key signatory of the accord, was subjected to a violent attack. The event, themed “The Commitment of the December 21 Sector Amid a Fragile Political Transition: Challenges and Perspectives”, became a stage for aggression orchestrated by supporters and cabinet members of Counselor Louis Gérald Gilles. Gilles is currently under indictment by Haitian judicial authorities following allegations of demanding a 100-million-gourde bribe, as revealed by the Anti-Corruption Unit (ULCC).
While addressing the audience in her capacity as a signatory and founder of the accord, Michel encountered immediate hostility when she raised concerns about the future role of Louis Gérald Gilles within the Presidential Council for Transition (CPT). The discussion, intended to foster unity on this contentious issue, quickly devolved into chaos, showcasing the pervasive influence of corruption.
The verbal and physical aggression from members of Gilles’ cabinet escalated into an alarming scene, disrupting the event held in a hotel conference room. This outbreak of violence shocked members of the press and attendees, illustrating the volatile climate surrounding the transition process.
Undeterred by the intimidation and hostility, Marjory Michel stood her ground. In a resolute address, she underscored her commitment to political ethics and integrity, clarifying that her stance was driven by principle, not personal animosity toward Louis Gérald Gilles.
“We believe in decency, morality, and political ethics. Under no circumstances should the December 21 Accord hold the transition hostage. If necessary, we must find a way to support Counselor Gilles in his legal journey. At the same time, the CPT must not impede the transition. If another path is required, we will take it while safeguarding the interests of all signatories,” she declared emphatically.
Michel’s courageous intervention resonated deeply, highlighting the internal tensions and formidable obstacles facing the December 21 Accord—a cornerstone of Haiti’s precarious political transition.
The incident sparked widespread reactions, with numerous activists praising Michel’s resilience and leadership on social media. Among her supporters were political activist Rilnor Acao from Petit-Goâve, Cily Lefort from Artibonite, and Evelyne Antenor, deputy coordinator of the Platform Fanm Angaje pou Ayiti. They condemned the threats and acts of violence from Gilles’ affiliates, labeling them an assassination attempt against the former minister.
This episode underscores the complexities and heightened stakes surrounding Haiti’s political transition, while also shining a spotlight on those who remain steadfast in their defense of integrity and justice.
