Nomination of Alix Didier Fils-Aimé as New Prime Minister: The U.S. Emphasizes Progress in Security, Election Organization, and Credibility

November 13, 2024

Amid a persistent crisis marked by insecurity and unprecedented socio-economic challenges, Haiti is entering a new political phase. On November 12, 2024, the U.S. Department of State, through spokesperson Matthew Miller, conveyed the official U.S. stance on the replacement of Garry Conille with Alix Didier Fils-Aimé as Prime Minister. This decision by the Transitional Presidential Council (TPC) follows extensive discussions, underscoring the need for a fresh start in the country.

The political context in Haiti remains complex, and the United States reiterated its commitment to supporting the Haitian people. Fils-Aimé’s appointment is seen as an opportunity to revitalize cooperation between Haitian institutions and their international partners. Washington has pledged to work with the new Prime Minister and the TPC to address critical priorities, including security, governance, and preparation for transparent elections.

Priorities for the New Government: A Joint Action Plan Anticipated

A key focus of this renewed collaboration will be the development of a joint action plan. The U.S. strongly encourages the TPC and the new Prime Minister to establish a clear roadmap aimed not only at improving public safety but also at strengthening governance. This plan should also pave the way for organizing free and fair elections, essential for restoring the confidence of both the Haitian population and the international community.

To avoid political gridlock, Washington insists on clearly defining roles between the TPC and the head of government. Transparency and mutual accountability will be key factors in preventing new institutional crises. According to Matthew Miller, such an approach is essential for the transitional authorities to gain credibility with Haitian citizens, who are dealing with alarming levels of violence, food insecurity, and forced displacement.

International Support and a Call for Accountability

The United States highlights the importance of strong leadership in Haiti, calling for the rapid implementation of promised reforms. It is crucial that the transitional government prioritize the collective interests of Haitians over personal political ambitions. Washington stresses that the population’s immediate needs demand concrete responses, going beyond mere declarations of intent.

Meanwhile, France has acknowledged the appointment of Alix Didier Fils-Aimé, expressing support for efforts to restore stability in Haiti. This international recognition underscores the importance of regional and global solidarity in guiding Haiti toward a sustainable resolution to its crisis.

A Decisive Moment for Haiti’s Future

The coming months will be critical for the country, with high expectations from international partners regarding the effectiveness of the new transitional government. Establishing an efficient cooperation framework between the TPC and Prime Minister Fils-Aimé is seen as an essential step in strengthening Haiti’s resilience in the face of numerous challenges.

In conclusion, the United States reaffirms its commitment to supporting the Haitian people, focusing on promoting security, good governance, and respect for fundamental rights. Stability in Haiti remains a regional priority, and the international community continues to closely monitor the country’s political developments.
