Garry Conille Invited to Urgent Meeting on Possible Mercenaries in Haiti

October 31, 2024

On October 29, the Transitional Presidential Council (TPC) extended an invitation to Prime Minister Garry Conille for a meeting to clarify the presence of a private company involved in public security in Haiti. This meeting, scheduled for Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Villa d’Accueil, has raised questions about the role of this security team, which some perceive as being composed of “mercenaries.”

In a letter sent to Camille Junior Edouard, Secretary-General of the Prime Minister’s Office, the Secretary-General of the Presidency, Marie E. Regine, requested that the invitation be conveyed to the Prime Minister.

The TPC, concerned about this presence, also requested all correspondence and potential agreements regarding this private security collaboration. The council expressed unease about the lack of information shared concerning these foreign actors, highlighting growing tension between the Council and the Prime Minister’s Office.

Sources indicate that, according to the Prime Minister’s Office, the individuals in question are not mercenaries but rather trainers working in support of the Haitian police. However, this explanation appears insufficient to ease the TPC’s concerns, as it criticizes the Prime Minister’s Office for not informing the council of the arrival of these security agents on national soil.
