Haiti: First Kenyan Soldier of the MSS Injured

August 17, 2024

According to a press note published on the official Twitter account of the Multinational Security Support (MSS) mission, a Kenyan soldier was injured during a clash with gangs.

This incident occurred on July 30, 2024, on the road to the seaport and a state hospital around 3:15 p.m.

Also, according to the press note, the MSS was patrolling the sea port area when they noticed an attack on a truck by people suspected of being gang members. The gangs executed the driver while looting the truck filled with rice.

During the exchange of fire, a Kenyan soldier was shot in the left shoulder. He was urgently transported to the Life Support Area (LSA) hospital and remains in stable condition while awaiting further medical intervention.

The press note made no mention of the Haitian National Police (HNP) and did not include its logo, suggesting that the MSS was patrolling the area alone. However, the MSS is often presented as a support force to the PNH.

The MSS was present with the HNP during the last two visits of Prime Minister Garry Conille to the State General Hospital, an area recaptured by the State from gangs. However, no mention of the HNP was made in this press note, which bore the name of Godfrey Otunge, the Force Commander.
