On Wednesday, July 10, 2024, Haitian Prime Minister Garry Conille published a report on the social media network X (formerly Twitter) about his meetings with the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the Special Representative of the UN Secretary General. Accompanied by several ministers of his government, Garry Conille described this meeting as a success, emphasizing the importance of sharing the priorities of the Haitian transition and strengthening international support.
Garry Conille is no stranger to the international scene. A doctor by training, he built a solid career in development and humanitarian aid, mainly within the United Nations. His experience is enhanced by his work alongside former US President Bill Clinton, UN Special Envoy for Haiti following the devastating 2010 earthquake. Conille also held senior positions in several African countries, accumulating valuable expertise in international diplomacy. This vast experience allows him to navigate with ease in the complexities of international cooperation and to mobilize crucial support for Haiti, notably that of the United States, which supports the deployment of an international force to help the Haitian police reestablish order.
Haiti has been going through a period of great political instability for decades, made worse by a recent resurgence of gang violence, which now controls 80% of the capital, Port-au-Prince. To deal with this crisis, a Presidential Transitional Council was formed last April after the resignation of controversial Prime Minister Ariel Henry. This council appointed Garry Conille as interim Prime Minister. Conille, who until then was regional director for UNICEF, made security and the fight against corruption his main priorities.
During the meeting with international representatives, Garry Conille highlighted the priorities of his transitional government, emphasizing the need for reinforced cooperation to stabilize the country. The challenges are colossal, but Garry Conille remains determined to leverage his experience and international support to successfully complete the Haitian transition.
