The trial of Christian Emmanuel Sanon before a federal court in Miami has brought new elements regarding the alleged financing of the plot that led to the assassination of Jovenel Moïse on July 7, 2021. During her testimony on Tuesday, October 6, FBI Special Agent Jacqueline Valdez reportedly explained that the analysis of documents and phones had made it possible to identify several alleged investors.
According to the elements presented at the hearing, businessman Samir Handal allegedly committed $4 million alone to the operation, hoping to recover his investment after the installation of the transitional power that Christian Emmanuel Sanon was to lead. Two other individuals, Larry Chadwell and Frederick Bergmann, allegedly invested $2 million and $3 million respectively, bringing the amount attributed to these three investors to $9 million.
The analysis of the phone of Antonio Intriago, head of the company CTU Security, reportedly allowed investigators to trace part of these financial movements and their alleged use. The money was allegedly used to finance various operational needs, including the purchase of equipment, air travel, lodging, vehicle rental and payment of mercenaries, according to the elements presented in court.
These revelations come as the American proceedings continue to expand around the assassination of the Haitian president, with several new defendants recently transferred to the United States. Samir Handal, 68, is notably due to appear on October 9 before the federal court in Miami, after Judge Eduardo Sanchez rejected his request for release on bail during a previous hearing.
