Haiti Authorizes Extraditions to the United States in the Moïse Case

The case of former President Jovenel Moïse’s assassination has taken a new turn.

The Ministry of Justice and Public Security (MJSP) announced on September 20, 2026, that it authorized the handover to U.S. authorities of several individuals detained in Haiti in connection with this case.

In a communication signed by Minister Patrick Pélissier, the MJSP indicates that this decision was made on instructions from the government, following a request from the United States and within the framework of judicial cooperation and extradition mechanisms between the two countries.

According to the information provided, Joseph Félix Badio and 17 former Colombian soldiers are among the individuals affected by this operation. Their transfer to the United States could allow American justice to pursue its proceedings in a case that is already largely internationalized.

The Haitian government justifies this decision by citing the difficulties encountered in national proceedings, five years after the assassination, while American justice has already obtained several convictions.

In May 2026, a federal jury in Miami found four defendants guilty of participation in the conspiracy that led to the death of Jovenel Moïse.

Haitian authorities specify, however, that evidence gathered in the United States may also contribute to the investigation being conducted in Haiti.

This cooperation could thus open a new judicial phase in one of the most sensitive criminal cases in the country’s recent history.
