The political party Les Engagés pour le Développement (EDE) welcomed the United Nations resolution of March 25, 2026, which qualifies the transatlantic slave trade as the “most serious crime against humanity.”
According to the party, this represents a major moral advancement, but it stresses that Haiti’s unique case must not be overlooked.
As the first Black republic born from a successful slave revolt, Haiti was forced to pay a heavy indemnity to its former colonizers after independence.
“Haiti is undoubtedly the only people in history forced to pay the price of its freedom,” EDE stated, calling for specific recognition of this structural injustice.
The party also welcomed early steps toward dialogue on reparations and the restitution of this unjust “debt.”
“History fully acknowledged ceases to be a burden; it becomes a strength,” the statement concludes.
