The Lower Artibonite region in Haiti was the scene of violent armed attacks for the third consecutive day, plunging several rural localities into terror. Heavily armed men, affiliated with the Gran Grif gang, stormed areas near Marchand-Dessalines, setting fire to homes and forcing hundreds of residents to flee.
The violence, which began Sunday in Pon Benwa before spreading to Jean-Denis, has resulted in a heavy toll. While the police mention at least 16 dead, human rights organizations estimate the number of victims could reach 70, or even more. Several dozen injured have also been recorded.
According to experts, these attacks were meticulously planned, with roads blocked and infrastructure destroyed to hinder law enforcement intervention. Despite prior alerts, the security response remains insufficient.
This escalation comes as the country prepares to host an international force tasked with combating gangs.
