Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs Anita Anand reacted to the dissolution of Haiti’s Presidential Transitional Council, whose mandate expired on February 8. Ottawa views this as “an important step,” while emphasizing the magnitude of the immediate challenges facing the government of Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé.
In an official statement, Canada’s top diplomat reiterated what her government considers urgent priorities. “Canada is counting on them to work diligently to improve security and organize general elections,” she stated.
Anita Anand stressed the need to place “the interests and well-being of the Haitian people at the heart of all efforts.” She believes that restarting the electoral process is an essential condition for restoring to citizens “their sovereign and constitutional right to choose their leaders.”
The Canadian government says it is prepared to maintain its support for Haiti, provided that “Haitian-led solutions remain at the forefront.” This position comes amid persistent insecurity and a political crisis that continues to hinder the country’s institutional normalization.
