On February 9, 2026, the General Secretariat of the Organization of American States (OAS) confirmed its willingness to support Haiti in the decisive phase of its political transition, focused on holding elections and strengthening national security.
Following the expiration of the Transitional Presidential Council’s mandate on February 7, the OAS acknowledged that Prime Minister Didier Fils-Aimé and his government will lead a brief interim period, strictly framed by defined objectives.
This transitional phase must prioritize improving security conditions and accelerating electoral preparations, in accordance with the announced timeline. The organization specified that it is providing technical and financial support to the Haitian National Police as well as to the National Identification Office.
In light of the growing strength of armed gangs, the OAS stressed the need for rapid deployment of the Gang Suppression Force. It also called for the opening of a structured national dialogue and a political process led by Haitians — an essential condition for lasting stability.
