Laurent Lamothe Publicly Breaks With Martelly and Admits a Major Political Error

December 17, 2025

In a message posted on Instagram on December 6, 2025, Laurent Lamothe announced that he has definitively severed ties with Michel Martelly since the assassination of Jovenel Moïse. He states that from that moment, “there was no longer any team or connection,” calling that period “a page of history definitively closed.”

The former Prime Minister explains that he maintained loyalty for too long, even as it became incompatible with the evolution of their relationship. He cites disloyalty, ingratitude, and manipulation that, according to him, came to dominate his former ally’s political practices.

Lamothe says he stayed silent out of restraint but now considers it necessary to publicly clarify his position, recalling that “everything ended in July 2021.” He apologizes to those who saw him supporting a leader whose conduct he no longer endorses.

Already sanctioned by Washington and Ottawa, the former head of government says he views this break with lucidity. He acknowledges that his support for Michel Martelly was, in hindsight, “one of the gravest mistakes” of his career.
