The National Police proceeded this Thursday, August 28, in Arcahaie, with the arrest of Evens Souffrant, former Director General of the Ministry of Religious Affairs. The ex-official was the subject of a warrant issued by investigating judge Noë Massillon Pierre-Louis, in connection with the arms trafficking case involving the Episcopal Church of Haiti.
According to information gathered, Souffrant was apprehended aboard a bus traveling from Port-au-Prince to Cap-Haïtien, suggesting an attempted escape. The investigating magistrate had already taken the precaution of issuing a travel ban against him, a measure aimed at preventing any attempt to flee abroad.
The operation was supervised by police commissioner Franck Désilien, who emphasized the need to ensure the suspect’s availability for the continuation of judicial proceedings. “The vigilance of law enforcement is essential in cases as sensitive as those linked to the illegal circulation of weapons,” he noted.
For the moment, Evens Souffrant is being held in custody at the Cité du Drapeau police station. His transfer to the competent authorities is expected so that he can respond to the charges brought against him in this explosive case, which implicates several institutional and religious actors.
This arrest marks an important step in the investigation led by the judiciary. It could pave the way for new revelations about the extent of the networks involved in arms trafficking in Haiti, a phenomenon that continues to fuel insecurity in the country.
