Cap-Haïtien — The Haitian Ministry of Public Works has kicked off a major rehabilitation project on the SOS Road, part of the broader Cap-Haïtien Urban Development Project (CHUD) aimed at modernizing infrastructure and boosting local commerce.
The work will involve rebuilding the road with a new drainage system and constructing a bridge over the Mapou River to ease traffic congestion. Plans call for a 3.5-meter-wide main lane, with additional widening at intersections to improve vehicle flow.
To accommodate the project, the government has announced expropriation measures affecting 36 residents along the planned route. Six families will receive new homes as part of a relocation plan. Officials say those impacted will be supported throughout the process to ensure humane and respectful resettlement.
Construction will be handled by COAMCO HAITI S.A., while the new bridge will be built by the MATIERE SAS – ECCOMAR S.A. consortium under the technical supervision of the TECHNIPLAN-SECOM group.
The initiative is part of wider efforts to revitalize Cap-Haïtien, including planned upgrades in the neighborhoods of Petite-Anse and Balan. Authorities say these improvements are designed not only to improve transportation but also to stimulate economic growth and modernize the city’s urban landscape.
