UN Provides Support to Internally Displaced Persons in Haiti’s Artibonite Department

May 18, 2025

In Haiti’s Artibonite department, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has emphasized the continued humanitarian efforts being carried out on behalf of displaced populations, despite significant security and logistical challenges.

“Humanitarian actors remain alongside displaced communities in Artibonite. Access to healthcare continues despite the obstacles. Every day, the response on the ground takes the form of concrete actions,” the organization stated, underscoring the unwavering commitment of field personnel. This statement reflects ongoing operations that took place in early May in the communes of Verrettes and La Chapelle.

Between May 5 and 7, nearly 2,000 displaced individuals received medical consultations through the deployment of three mobile clinics—an initiative made possible with the support of UNICEF. Amid rising insecurity across the region, this targeted intervention provided temporary relief to thousands of families who otherwise had no access to healthcare.

As armed violence continues to trigger waves of displacement across the country, Artibonite is no longer being spared. According to the UN, more than one million people are now internally displaced throughout Haiti, including approximately 84,000 in Artibonite alone.
