After three days of intense rain between April 11 and 13, 2026, the Northwest department is facing a major crisis marked by human losses and widespread destruction. The provisional toll stands at 12 dead, mainly recorded in several sections of Saint-Louis du Nord, while injuries have also been reported.
The floods have severely hit several communes, including Port-de-Paix, Saint-Louis du Nord, and Anse-à-Foleur, where hundreds of families are directly affected. More than 800 homes were flooded, forcing many residents to abandon their homes due to the rapid rise of floodwaters.
Essential infrastructure could not withstand the violence of the weather, worsening the region’s isolation. Roads became impassable, a bridge was washed away, and health structures suffered damage, causing school and commercial activities to cease in several areas.
The economic and humanitarian impact is expected to be lasting, with crops devastated and livestock lost in several rural localities. Despite the partial activation of emergency mechanisms, relief efforts remain limited by logistical constraints, while authorities issue an urgent appeal for help to meet the immediate needs of the victims.
