US Ambassador to the UN Announces $60 Million in Humanitarian Aid and Equipment to Strengthen Security in Haiti

Port-au-Prince, Haiti, July 22, 2024 – This Monday, Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield, United States representative to the United Nations, made an important visit to Haiti, marked by several major commitments aimed at supporting the country. During her visit, the ambassador announced $60 million in additional humanitarian aid, as well as the provision of armored vehicles to strengthen security in Haiti. She specified that this assistance aims to respond to the urgent needs of the Haitian people and to support their quest for a more secure, prosperous, and democratic future. 

Meeting with the United Nations in Haiti 

Upon her arrival in Port-au-Prince, Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield met with Maria Isabel Salvador, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Haiti and head of BINUH (United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti), as well as a delegation of the United Nations team in the country. During this meeting, the ambassador expressed her gratitude to the team for their vital work in support of the Haitian population. She and Special Representative Salvador stressed the importance of increased donor assistance and seamless coordination between the international community, BINUH, Haiti’s transitional government, and the multinational security support mission. They also discussed ways to support the Haitian government in organizing free and fair elections as soon as possible, including through the rapid appointment of a credible and inclusive Provisional Electoral Council. 

Inspection of Logistics Support Area Facilities 

The visit also included an inspection of the Logistics Support Area (LSA) facilities of the Multinational Security Support (MSS) mission. Impressed by what she saw, Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield noted that these infrastructures will play a crucial role as a training and support center for MSS personnel, thus strengthening the valiant efforts of the Haitian National Police to restore peace, security, and safety for all Haitians. 

Meeting with Young Haitian Leaders 

Finally, the ambassador met young Haitian leaders committed to the defense of human rights and the empowerment of women. She said she was inspired by their passion and commitment, stating that empowering women and youth is essential to pave the way for better days in Haiti.
