According to the International Organization for Migration, the humanitarian situation in Haiti worsened significantly in January 2026, with more than 1.4 million people forced to flee their homes due to violence. This massive flow of internally displaced persons far exceeds the hosting capacities of communities and local services.
At the same time, the IOM reports that more than 23,000 Haitians were expelled from the Dominican Republic during the month of January alone. These forced returns, often without assistance, plunge individuals into immediate hardship, without housing or access to essential services.
The combination of internal displacement and expulsions is creating unprecedented humanitarian pressure. Needs for shelter, food, and basic healthcare are increasing faster than available responses, overwhelming local infrastructure.
In response, the IOM continues emergency assistance while supporting stabilization initiatives with authorities and communities. The organization warns that without regional coordination and structural measures, the crisis risks becoming deeply entrenched.
