As commercial flights have resumed between Cap-Haïtien, Port-au-Prince, and Les Cayes, the U.S. Embassy is strongly advising American citizens to leave Haiti as soon as they consider it safe to do so. “U.S. citizens in Haiti are urged to depart the country using available commercial or private transportation options,” reads an official message issued Tuesday.
The diplomatic mission acknowledged that certain helicopter flights are operating outside traditional routes but warned that these options carry risks. It also reminded the public that U.S. government personnel are not authorized to use commercial flights to or from Port-au-Prince due to FAA restrictions.
Beyond transportation concerns, the Embassy urged citizens to avoid gatherings, maintain a low profile, and stay informed through local media. “Be prepared to shelter in place for an extended period if necessary,” it emphasized.
In this tense context, all American citizens are advised to carry valid identification at all times, keep their travel documents up to date, and proactively plan any evacuation. The Embassy reiterated that “the U.S. government does not endorse private transport providers or commercial carriers.”
