During the UN Security Council meeting on Haiti on January 22, 2025, Dorothy Shea, acting chargé d’affaires of the U.S. mission to the UN, emphasized the need for Haiti’s transitional government to focus on governance rather than personal or political interests. She highlighted the major challenges Haiti faces in governance and security, noting that internal political infighting only worsens the situation. “This is not the time for internal strife,” she stated, calling for constructive collaboration to overcome current obstacles.
Dorothy Shea also urged the Transitional Presidential Council (TPC) to continue its cooperation with the UN Integrated Office in Haiti (BINUH) to support the political process and the Haitian people. She stressed the importance of creating the conditions necessary to hold free and fair elections, while addressing recent allegations of corruption involving three TPC members. “We strongly encourage Haitian efforts to address these allegations and promote transparency and accountability,” she added, underscoring the urgency of restoring public trust.
Responding to criticism from China and Russia, the U.S. diplomat reaffirmed the need to avoid scapegoating and instead focus on practical solutions for Haiti. She called for a collective and constructive approach, reminding all parties that the priority must be stability and governance to help the country emerge from its crisis. This call for unity and accountability serves as a warning against the risks of prolonged political and security paralysis.
