The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Religious Affairs (MAEC), under the leadership of Dominique Dupuy, expressed deep concern over the recent tragic events involving Haitian nationals at the border and in neighboring territory. In a recent press release, the MAEC strongly condemned the inhumane treatment that led to the death of three of its fellow citizens. The Ministry firmly demanded that the Dominican authorities investigate the circumstances of these deaths and identify those responsible.
On Saturday, July 5, the Support Group for Returnees and Refugees (GARR) confirmed the tragic death of Saint Mira Millien, a 23-year-old woman. Millien died after being detained in subhuman conditions by Dominican immigration authorities. The National Migration Office (ONM) specified that Millien was apprehended in Duarte on July 3, 2024, while she was sick and on her way to Haiti, succumbing to a lack of appropriate care.
GARR also reported a gruesome double murder that occurred in Paso Cena on July 2, 2024. Jean Duversaint and Maurice Delia, both from Jacmel, were shot dead by an armed Dominican. Despite the efforts made by their families with the local authorities, no significant progress has been made in this case.
The MAEC has instructed the Haitian Embassy in Santo Domingo to closely monitor these cases and ensure that justice is served. Dominique Dupuy stressed the importance of protecting the rights of Haitian citizens, wherever they are, and insisted on the need for bilateral relations based on respect and human dignity.
