Florida Republican Congressman Carlos Giménez has publicly spoken out against the return of Haitian nationals benefiting from Temporary Protected Status (TPS) to Haiti. A guest on CBS News’ Face the Nation, he stated that such a decision would constitute “a very serious mistake,” despite the green light given by the U.S. Supreme Court to the administration.
According to the congressman, the current situation in Haiti does not allow for a safe return for TPS beneficiaries. “There is no doubt that Haiti is a failed state. Deporting TPS Haitians to Haiti right now would be a huge mistake,” he said, emphasizing the severity of the crisis the country is going through.
Carlos Giménez also defended Venezuelan nationals covered by the same protection mechanism. He argued that they should regain their temporary status, citing the persistent difficulties facing Venezuela as well as the consequences of the recent earthquake that struck the country.
Addressing President Donald Trump directly, the Republican lawmaker called on the United States to maintain its tradition of welcoming those in distress. “The United States must act as a refuge for those in need,” he affirmed, advocating for a more cautious approach toward TPS beneficiaries.
