Political Crisis in Haiti: Garry Conille Refuses to Step Down and Defends the Legitimacy of His Mandate

November 11, 2024

The political situation in Haiti is growing increasingly complex following the release of a decree announcing the replacement of Garry Conille by Alix Didier Fils Aimé. In a statement, Conille firmly rejected this decision, which he considers illegal and in violation of the country’s Constitution.

He emphasized that, according to Article 158 of the Constitution, the Prime Minister can only be removed through a parliamentary motion of censure, not by a unilateral decision of the Transitional Presidential Council (TPC). Conille argued that this move contradicts the guidelines for the transition established in the April 3, 2024 Agreement.

Conille condemned this action as an attempt to destabilize the country amidst an ongoing crisis. He noted that, given the current situation marked by insecurity and gang violence, the country requires stable governance that upholds legality to navigate this challenging period.

The Prime Minister expressed his determination to continue working towards the country’s stability and peace, staying true to the principles of dialogue and cooperation set forth in the April 3 Agreement. He also urged political and social actors to stand up for legality and to avoid actions that would weaken the state.

In closing, Garry Conille reaffirmed his commitment to a future of justice and prosperity for Haiti, calling on divine blessings to overcome the crisis and ensure a peaceful transition.
