On Saturday, October 19, 2024, Patrick Saint-Hilaire, the representative of the Catholic Church, was elected president of the Provisional Electoral Council (PEC) during an internal election held less than 24 hours after the installation of the institution’s seven members. This internal vote, aimed at forming a new leadership team, resulted in the appointment of four members to key positions within the PEC.
Patrick Saint-Hilaire won the election, defeating Schnaïda Adely, the representative of the Vodou sector, who has now taken the role of vice president. Nemrod Sanon, representing the labor sector, was appointed as the secretary general, while Jacques Desrosiers, the representative of the press sector, was elected as treasurer.
The internal electoral process within the PEC was notably marked by the absence of two key representatives. The sectors of human rights and women’s organizations, which were expected to nominate members to complete the institution, are still facing internal disagreements. As a result, these sectors have yet to appoint their representatives to the PEC, a situation that has not occurred since 2006.
Currently, the PEC is operating with seven members instead of the full nine, which may affect the dynamics and efficiency of the institution in managing the upcoming electoral deadlines.
