The 14th edition of the National Diaspora Day, which concluded on April 25, 2025, at the Karibe Convention Center, highlighted the urgency of citizen participation. “Diaspora and Governance: Effective and Inclusive Participation,” the central theme of the discussions, emphasizes the need to fully integrate Haitians abroad into national decision-making.
Minister Kathia Verdier stressed the key role of the diaspora, calling it “an unwavering pillar of our national foundation.” With financial remittances estimated at over $3 billion annually and a multidisciplinary expertise, the inclusion of compatriots in governance has become a strategic priority for the transitional government.
Among the key announcements, the institutionalization of secure mechanisms to allow the diaspora to vote in the constitutional referendum and future elections was welcomed. “Your influence must be fully exercised,” said the minister, referring to a roadmap developed with Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé.
Panels featuring international experts and diaspora leaders outlined solutions for concrete participation. “We cannot talk about the country’s reconstruction without the participation of all its children,” the minister reminded, emphasizing the need for a unified voice between Haitians inside and outside the country.
This edition also spotlighted initiatives such as the creation of a diaspora advisory council and partnerships to strengthen productive investment. “Together, we must build a governance model that respects equal rights,” she insisted, calling for transnational solidarity.
In conclusion, the call for a “sacred union” resonated as a mutual commitment. “Your voice is an imperative,” concluded Kathia Verdier, marking a historic week for Haiti’s reconstruction.
