Historic Opening: The Transitional Presidential Council Applauds France’s Initiative

April 28, 2025

On Wednesday, April 23, 2025, the Transitional Presidential Council (TPC) praised the recent statement from the Élysée, calling the French acknowledgment of its past relations with Haiti a “historic recognition.” “President Macron is opening the door to writing a new chapter of shared history, in harmony with the truth of the past,” the statement emphasized.

For the TPC, this move represents a crucial turning point in the redefinition of Franco-Haitian ties, long marked by silence and neglect. The TPC announced its full commitment to the French-Haitian Joint Commission, believing it will “guide the reflections of both sides.”

The Republic of Haiti views this opening as a deeply symbolic act, capable of fostering a shared and fruitful memory. “Memory is indeed a force that, while acknowledging the truth of history, enlightens minds seeking to build a common future,” the TPC affirmed.

The Council reiterated its trust in Madame Gusti-Klara Gaillard, Haitian co-chair of the commission, and commended the contribution of Mr. Yves Saint-Geours, the French representative. This renewed cooperation is seen as a promising foundation for a transparent and respectful partnership.

The Haitian presidency also underscored the significance of the recent resolution by the French Senate, which calls for supporting the restoration of security in Haiti. “It strengthens the Élysée’s statement offering full support for efforts aimed at restoring security in Haiti,” the communiqué insisted.

In the background, this French parliamentary initiative reflects a growing international willingness to show solidarity in the face of Haiti’s crisis. It reaffirms that Haiti “now more than ever needs the support of its friends and partners to ensure the right to life and human dignity for all.”
