Divisional Commissioner Hérard Joseph was officially installed on Wednesday, February 26, in Delmas, replacing Principal Commissioner Jean David Mathias. The ceremony, held under the supervision of West Departmental Director 1, Divisional Commissioner Luckner Dumond, took place amid escalating insecurity. Armed gangs continue to intensify their attacks in several neighborhoods, worsening an already critical situation.
For the past week, Delmas has become one of the epicenters of the violence gripping the capital. On February 25, a deadly attack shook Delmas 30 at dawn, forcing dozens of families to flee. On Wednesday, residents of Delmas 19 evacuated their homes in a panic, fearing another gang offensive. Armed clashes and house fires have further deepened the panic, leaving the population in a state of constant fear.
The appointment of Commissioner Joseph has raised expectations, as security forces struggle to regain control of Delmas. Frustrated by the authorities’ inaction, the population hopes for immediate measures to curb the expansion of criminal groups.
