Haiti: Tropical Storm Melissa Already Leaves One Dead and Five Injured

October 27, 2025

Tropical Storm Melissa has already caused the death of one man and injured five others, according to the first report from the National System for Risk and Disaster Management (SNGRD).

In the commune of Marigot, in the Southeast, a man in his seventies was killed by a falling tree, while in Artibonite, five people were injured following flooding caused by heavy rains.

As weather conditions worsen, the Hydrometeorological Unit (UHM) has placed the departments of Southeast, South, Nippes, Grand’Anse, and West under orange cyclone alert, a measure immediately relayed by the Directorate General of Civil Protection (DGPC).

The DGPC has strengthened its prevention and awareness efforts, with seven media appearances by the Director General accompanied by UHM forecasters — two of which were broadcast on the National Television of Haiti (TNH) — urging the population to remain cautious.

Authorities are calling on residents in high-risk areas to follow official instructions, avoid flood-prone zones, and refrain from crossing swollen rivers.
