On Wednesday, July 17, Kenyan police officers, accompanied by agents of the Haitian National Police (PNH) and army soldiers, carried out an operation against armed bandits in downtown Port-au-Prince.
Several armored vehicles were deployed as part of this intervention, marking the first major action by Kenyan police officers since the arrival of their first contingent in Haiti on June 25. For the moment, Haitian police authorities have not yet published any reports.
The operation encountered a snag when one of the Maxxpro infantry vehicles broke down in the middle of combat. Despite this setback, the police continued their security mission, which lasted more than half an hour. During the intervention, an individual identified as a journalist’s driver was injured by a tear gas canister.
The number of Kenyan police officers currently present in Haiti stands at 400. The Multinational Security Support (MSS) mission aims to strengthen the capacities of the PNH and restore security in the capital. The next steps will be crucial to evaluate the effectiveness of this intervention and plan future actions.
