The end of Haitian TPS is producing its first concrete effects in Springfield, Ohio, where at least a dozen former beneficiaries have been summoned by US immigration services. After their interviews, several were reportedly fitted with electronic bracelets and informed of an upcoming court hearing.
According to the Springfield Haitian Support Center, these individuals were invited to appear with their immigration documents at an ICE office near Cincinnati. The end of TPS, effective since July 27, 2026, now exposes some beneficiaries to individual immigration proceedings that can go as far as deportation.
The electronic monitoring device is presented by ICE as an alternative to detention, but its use raises concern among immigrant advocacy groups. The Department of Homeland Security has not specified how many Haitians are affected nor the criteria used to impose these measures on them.
The situation fuels concerns within a large Haitian community in Springfield, where many families have lived and worked for several years. Nationwide, the end of TPS affects more than 350,000 Haitians, but their situations are not identical: the consequences depend in particular on their immigration history and any other protections they may benefit from.
